What is CLIL?

Image
What is CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning)? Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is an approach where students learn a subject and a second language at the same time. A science course, for example, can be taught to students in English and they will not only learn about science, but they will also gain relevant vocabulary and language skills. It’s important to note that CLIL is not a means of simplifying content or reteaching something students already know in a new language. CLIL courses should truly integrate the language and content in order to be successful – and success is determined when both the subject matter and language is learned. What are the main benefits of CLIL? - Many teachers see CLIL as a more natural way to learn a language; when a subject is taught in that language there is a concrete reason to learn both at the same time. And as students have a real context to learn the language in, they are often more motivated to do so, as they can onl...

The Four C's in CLIL

Image
The Four C's in CLIL 1. Content Specific knowledge, skills and understanding related to the subject. 2. Communication Use of the foreign language to learn and to communicate the subject’s content. 3. Cognition Thinking skills which link concept formation (abstract and concrete), understanding and language. 4. Culture Connect to learning of both content and language with the student’s culture and the foreign language culture. Example (primary and secondary education) 1. Content Depending on their age, students will learn about their forms and colours, when to plant or sow, germination or their content in nutrients.  2. Communication Depending on their age, students will just learn some words to describe them in a very simple way (colour and shape), or they will learn more specific vocabulary and grammar structures that will allow them to describe the main steps of the plant cycle. 3. Cognition Depending on their age, students will just associate different colour or shapes to differe...

Models of CLIL

Image
Models of CLIL The CLIL approach is flexible in order to take account of a wide range of contexts: however, for CLIL to be effective, certain fundamental principles must be recognized as essential. Teachers need a common plan: those involved with planning and delivering the CLIL curriculum should have the means to: define and support a contextualized interpretation of CLIL, make explicit the fundamental principles upon which it is based and put in place rigorous monitoring and evaluation processes. (Coyle, Hood & Marsh, 2010) They believe that the aim of the planning process is 'to have a set of learning activities that allow your students to explore different subject matter areas using different thinking processes and language processes... that are exciting and enjoyable... [that have authentic goals... [that] build on students' previous cultural and linguistic experiences... [that] involve students working cooperatively... and provide success to students at many levels...
